If you’re travelling around the island, hopping from golf course to golf course, you’re going to need some stops to fill up the downtime. Thankfully, our island is rich with a culture in hospitality, and is steeped in the theory that local is best.

Breton Brewing Company:

Located on Keltic Drive, just minutes away from the golf course, is one of the best places to tilt a cold one in Cape Breton. The atmosphere is intimate, the service is great and there is no shortage of great local beer to sample. There’s a good chance you’ll catch some local music, as there’s often live entertainment throughout the summer. This is the perfect stop after your round to cheers with friends, all while experiencing the down-home hospitality that Cape Breton is known for. Recommendation: Set your watch to island time with their Island Time Lager. It’s cold, smooth, and refreshing. Just what you need after 18 holes.

Glenora Distillery:

It may come as a surprise, but there is more to do on Cape Breton Island than golf. Regardless if you’re visiting from away, or a local Cape Bretoner wanting to explore the island, Glenora Distillery in Mabou is a must-visit attraction for any tourist. Step away from the ordinary but still satisfy your senses with the rich history, calming surroundings, and of course, some of the best whisky in the world. To really do Glenora right, we suggest taking a guided tour that will help you understand the complexities and passion that goes into producing a single malt whisky. Your appreciation for the craft only makes a Glen Breton Rare taste all the better. Recommendation: We suggest signing up for the Whisky Culinary Package, which includes a guided tour, a 3-course Nova Scotia Dinner overlooking the distillery, an evening ceilidh, and a stay at the Inn.

Big Spruce Brewing:

If you’re driving along the Cabot Trail, there’s a hidden gem just off the beaten path. Big SpruceBrewing is located in Nyanza, just outside of Baddeck. Their certified organic farm produces some truly delicious beer, and their cozy patio is always bustling with activity, making it the perfect spot to rub elbows with locals and fellow travelers. There’s a food truck slinging fresh farm-to-form bites, made fresh from Cape Breton sources ingredients. Add in a live fiddler playing in the corner, and you have yourself an old fashion kitchen party. Don’t forget to fill up your growler with your favorite beer before you leave, so you can take apart of Big Spruce with you. Recommendation: We recommend the beer flight that offers you the opportunity to sample everything from Kitchen Party Ale to the Silver Tart.

Eileanan Brèagha Vinyards:

Eileanan Brèagha (pronouced AY-len-an BREE-ah)overlooks the Bras D’Or Lakes and is Cape Breton Island’s first and only estate winery. It’s home on Marble Mountain in River Denys sits it in the perfect location that produces wine as good as its views. Explore the landscape and sample some of Nova Scotia’s finest wine in their tasting room. Recommendation: No traveler in Cape Breton should go without drinking Nova Scotia’s most famous wine, the L’Acadie Blanc. Light, refreshing, and buying a bottle will impress your guests the next time you host a BBQ after your round of golf.

Please be sure to always have a designated driver, and always drink responsibly.

Throughout the season, several events and programs are offered specifically for ladies. If you have any questions or are interested in participating and would like further information, feel free to contact any representative noted at the bottom of the page.

Season Start! Our season typically starts in May when we host a Potluck Supper for the lady members. An email notification is sent in advance and we encourage as many as possible to attend. This event is a great way to meet other members and hear about plans for the upcoming season.

Members’ League: Our members’ Ladies League golf every Tuesday morning, with Tee Times starting at 9 AM. One of our members coordinates the weekly schedule for a one month duration. If you wish to golf with the league on Tuesday, you send an email on the Sunday prior to the person assigned to the schedule. Members receive an email each month advising of who will be managing the schedule. All members are welcome to attend, regardless of experience level.

Ladies and Senior Ladies Club Championship: These events are held on the same weekend each summer. Senior ladies are those who are age 50 and over. Members have the option to compete for both titles.

Ladies Invitational: Each summer we host an Invitational Tournament (two person scramble format). Ladies from clubs across Cape Breton and as far as Antigonish are invited to participate. Typically we have a great turnout for our Invitational, with lots of fun to be had and new friendships formed.

Other Ladies Invitationals: Clubs across Cape Breton also host Invitationals. As we receive information about dates and other specifics we share these details via email and our Facebook pages.

Wednesday Ladies Night: Ladies Night is hosted each Wednesday from 3pm to 7pm. This program is open to members and non-members. Tee times must be booked in the Pro Shop on Sunday. On Monday, if there are tee times not filled by the ladies they are opened to whoever may wish to take them.

Associate Memberships: Associate members from other courses enjoy the same rights/privileges as Seaview members. The only exception is they cannot participate in our club championships; however, they can golf on Tuesdays if they wish.

Season Close: We host a closing banquet at the end of the season, usually in October. A notification email is sent in advance with a request for an RSVP so we will have numbers for planning. Again, as many members as possible are encouraged to attend.

4 Things to Work on to Improve Your Game During The Off Season

The season may be over but that doesn’t mean you can’t work out some kinks to improve your game during the off season. At Seaview Golf & Country Club we have two state-of-the-art golf simulators that you can use to fine tune your golf game for next season. A lower score won’t be achieved by continuing the same habits you’ve been stuck in this past summer. If you want to change your score, you need to change your game. It’s not too late to adjust some aspects of your game.

Understand Your Swing Path (and what it should look like vs. actual) – The arch of your club path is vital to hitting the ball straight. At first, focus on the lower half of your swing (what happens below your elbows on both your approach and backswing), and create a natural swing path. If the club is going out behind, or coming down on the ball, that isn’t natural. Most obviously (but most difficult), come at the ball and push it forward in a straight line. Take some time and practice this swing path with a 7 or 8 iron, and get a buddy to help correct you. Better yet, meet with the Golf Pro for some lessons.

Course Management: By now, you should understand the course inside and out. If you’ve set goals to improve this summer, but didn’t take the time to audit the course and where you’re losing strokes. When you’re golfing the same course a few times per week, you need to approach each hole like a game of chess. You need to be thinking 3 or 4 moves ahead. Your second and third shots are your difference makers. So plan them out ahead of time and shave those last few strokes off your round. Use the driving range option on the simulator to plot out different shot types that you know you’ll be hitting during your rounds next summer and come out of the gates firing.

Learn to Putt: Accuracy and being able to read greens comes with practice and time. For now, get the basics of your putt stroke figured out.
Try overcompensating with the weight of your putter, let the club do the swinging, and keep your eyes on the ball. Test out what happens when you hit the ball with the toe of your putter, then with the foot. How does this help uphill or downhill putts? If you’re taking 36 or more putts per round, just imagine what only taking 27 putts or less would do to your score. That should be reason enough to show up 20 minutes early to roll a few.

3 Best Places to Eat When Visiting Seaview

Golf can build up quite the appetite. We understand that you need to fuel up before and after each round, and that our visitors deserve the best our corner of the island has to offer.

Located all within 5 minutes of our course is some of the best food you can treat yourself to regardless if you’re visiting our course for the first time, if you’re traveling our beautiful island, or if you golf here every single day.

Here are the best restaurants serving the best food near Seaview Golf and Country Club:

The Black Spoon

Not far from the course is a quaint and cozy bistro that would rival any in the province. Recently recommended in “Where to Eat in Canada” magazine, The Black Spoon is the perfect place for lunch before an afternoon round, or after an early morning 18.

The charming atmosphere is complimented by great service and seriously delicious food. A fresh and local take on traditional bistro fare adds tempting dishes like Seafood Chowder, Scallop Carbonara, and Bacon Bourbon Ribs.

No time for a full meal? Hit up the Black Spoon Espresso Bar nearby for a shot of java to perk you up for the course.

We Recommend: Black Bean Burger with an Apple Almond Salad.

Thyme Savour

This is a must stop kitchen if you want to get in 18 holes and still have a homemade lasagna on the table for your family when they get home. Thyme Savour not only provides delicious,
homemade heat and serve meals, they also provide amazing choices to take with you to the course.

The Grab n’ Go menu is perfect for a fresh packed lunch to keep you energized on the course. The always changing menu always has fresh and healthy choices made with local ingredients that will keep you coming back again and again.

We Recommend: Buffalo Chicken Sandwich to go.

The Lobster Pound and Moore

This is the type of restaurant you take people when you’re trying to impress. Whether it’s after a business meeting on the course, or with a group of golf buddies looking to fill their
bellies after a round. The Lobster Pound will not disappoint.

Quickly becoming one of the best restaurants in the province, locals and travelers alike will love the taste of real Cape Breton cooking made with fresh-as-can-be seafood, local
ingredients, and down home hospitality.

Dishes like Maple Smoked Salmon, Fish and Chips, Calamari, Pasta, and of course Lobster are served like you’ve never tasted before. The generous portions cooked by professionally trained chefs makes this a must-stop after your round.

We Recommend: Lobster Ravioli (try not to lick the plate when you’re done).

Honorable Mention: A & K Lick-A-Chick

Visiting from out of town? No trip to Cape Breton is complete without a stop at the world famous A & K Lick-A-Chick. It’s only minutes from the course and has some of the best fried chicken you’ll ever eat. But be warned: this is probably best left for after your round.

It’s mid-season, the rust is shaken off from the spring, you’re on the 10th hole, and just shot the best front-9 you can remember. All of a sudden everything starts to fall apart. One second you’re dialed in and the next you’re shots are pulling up short, your swing isn’t as smooth as it was an hour ago, and your round is in a tail spin.

This is when most golfers start telling themselves excuses like “I shouldn’t have added up my score before the round was over” or “the greens are a lot slower on the back nine” or “the wind really picked up”. While some of those may be true (especially adding your score up after 9, what were you thinking?), it’s most likely a more simple reason: you’re dehydrated.

Mild dehydration effects up to 75% of golfers at some point, and perhaps a little more often than it should.

Symptoms of dehydration includes fatigue, weakness, and muscle stiffness. Either one of these can be a game killer. However, the symptom that sneaks up on most golfers is the impairment of their cognitive performance. This study performed by the National Strength and Conditioning Association proves that mild dehydration has drastic impact on a golfer’s accuracy, distance, and distance judgement.

Unfortunately for many people, cognitive impairment is typically the first symptom to strike, and it can happen without you even feeling dehydrated. Just because you’re not thirsty and tired doesn’t mean you aren’t beginning to show signs of dehydration. Four and a half hours in the hot sun is a long time, and you lose a lot of fluids over the duration of a round. If you notice your ability to manage the course properly slipping, and can’t quite put the ball where you usually can, there’s a good chance you’re becoming dehydrated.

This is especially important for golfers over the age of 50. As we get older, our triggers for thirst become less sensitive. As a result, many people over 50 wait until they feel thirsty until they drink fluids, when in reality they are most likely already mildly dehydrated.

The great news is this will be the easiest fix to your round. Pack some water, drink a Gatorade, whatever it takes to stay hydrated. Take a drink before you tee off at each hole. Don’t wait for signs of thirst before you hydrate. Prevention is the game, and not even tallying your score before the end of your round will sabotage your score (but seriously, don’t do that either).

Having a proper warm up before a round of golf makes sense in more ways than one. Taking the time to warm up and stretch will help prevent injury, prepare your muscles, but also allow you to move properly, making you a better golfer.

It doesn’t take much to get your body ready to golf. Here’s the only warm-up you’ll ever need, and you can do it in under 10 minutes.

KNEE HUGS

What to do: Stand up straight with your legs together. Keeping your back straight and chest puffed, bring your left knee up to your chest, and wrap both arms around the knee and hug, pulling your knee as close into your chest as you can. Don’t forget to contract your right glute. Hold for 3 seconds, then lower your leg to the ground and repeat with the other leg. Do this 6 times per leg.

What it does: The stretch in your glutes, hamstrings, and hip flexors are great for helping you maintain proper form and posture throughout a swing.

HAMSTRING T STRETCH

What to do: Stand up straight with your legs together and arms by your sides. Lift one leg slightly off the ground and begin to bend at the waist, keeping the grounded leg straight. Raise your leg so it is behind you and parallel to the ground, trying your best to form a ‘T’ shape. Once you feel your grounded leg hamstring stretching, hold it for a moment, then slowly return to the ground. Switch legs and repeat 6 times per leg.

What it does: Loose and stretched hamstrings will allow you to fire your core muscles properly,
which is crucial for a great swing. This will also help you properly transfer weight, and prevent
injury to your lower back.

HIP CROSSOVERS

What to do: Lie on your back with your knees bent, legs shoulder width apart, and feet on the ground. Rotating at the hip, twist your knees to one side until your knees touch the ground, being sure to keep your shoulders flat. Now repeat on the opposite side, completing 6 reps per side.

What it does: This move prepares your body for torque applied to the hip region in your backswing and follow through. Stretching the muscles in your lower body and opening your tendons and lower back will help prevent injury and pulled muscles.

TORSO ROTATIONS

What to do: Hold a club behind your back, placed slightly below your armpits and in the bend of your elbow. Place your palms on your body, and stand up straight with your feet shoulder width apart. Rotate your torso to the left, without moving your hips, and hold for 2 seconds. Slowly return back to the starting position and repeat on the left side. Alternate sides 10 times each. This can also be done seated, straddling a bench for grounded posture.

What it does: The stretch and loosening of the torso will help you improve your rotational mobility during swings, and especially help in preventing injury for those awkward shots on unconventional angles.

Y STRETCH

What to do: Stand with your feet together and reach your arms out above your head shaping a Y. You could even hold both ends of your driver above your head. Keep your gaze forward and try to reach higher, lengthening your arms and torso. Slowly curve your torso to the right, creating a crescent moon shape, stretching out your left side. Take deep breaths as you lengthen the stretch, and hold for a few breaths before slowly returning. Now repeat by curving to the left.

What it does: This stretch will open up your torso, arms, and shoulders, lengthening your muscles and loosening you up to perform natural swings that flow without effort.

The golf course can be a great place to bring clients, prospective buyers, investors, or future partners. You can get a lot accomplished together on the golf course. A business meeting on the course can also be a wasted opportunity, setting you back further than you were before tee-off.

If you want to facilitate a successful meeting on the golf course, there are a few things you need to consider beforehand.

This Is Business

If you’re going to conduct a successful business meeting on the golf course, your first priority needs to be the business at hand, not your golf game.

Don’t worry about being competitive, and this isn’t the time to test out new clubs or techniques. Relax and let the game be casual, and put more energy into building a relationship, maintaining strong conversation, and confidently presenting your business objectives.

Even if you’re meeting with a naturally competitive person, prioritizing business first will lead them to do the same, and keep you in control of the ship.

Still Talk About Other Things

Like any other meeting, it’s a good idea to include some casual chit chat. If you’re only talking points are business related, the game will get stale really quick, and you’ll miss a great opportunity to get to know your prospective clients on a personal level.

A typical meeting usually lasts between 30 minutes to an hour. A meeting on the golf course is going to last 4 hours plus. Learn about the other persons family, background, how they got into the business they are in. Talk about light topics such as sports or better yet, golf equipment.

When you connect with people personally it will be easier to identify their needs professionally. Plus, when they get to know you, they’re more likely to trust working together.

Be Prepared

You would never show up to a sales pitch or a business meeting without preparing beforehand. A meeting on the golf course is no different.

Make sure you plan ahead and write down talking points, KPI’s, case studies, or whatever metrics and statistics you need to successfully present your business. Don’t be afraid to bring an iPad with a pre-loaded presentation slides, or even an infographic you created beforehand.

Just remember this isn’t the time to hand out collateral, or send the other person off with paper and brochures. And don’t forget to keep the pace. Other people are golfing too.

Timing Is Everything

Save conversation for when you’re in the golf cart either between holes or after tee-off. The tee box is no place for business talk and neither is the green.

Be mindful of other golfers and pick your moments. You’ll notice and agree that these moments are when you’re both in the cart together, or preparing for fairway shots.

Next Steps

Once you sink your final putts on 18, have a plan in place to set up a meeting outside of the course on a different date. The meeting doesn’t need to extend to the bar, and there’s no need to grab a meal afterwards.

It’s time to end the meeting and part ways. Later that day, send an email about when to meet next, and thank them for spending the day with you.

Golf is an amazing sport. As an adult, it’s a great way to unwind, stay in shape, hang out with friends, meet new people and connect with the outdoors. There is no doubt about the positive benefits golfing has on ones life.

Why wait until we’re adults to figure out the greatness of golf? In fact, the benefits of golf are even more important for children. Putting your kids in golf may be the best decision you make for them, not only for the summer, but for their future.

Here’s why golf is great for kids:

Keeps Them Active

Let’s get the most important reason out of the way first. No parent wants their kids to be stuck in the house all summer, glued to a computer screen playing video games.

The golf course will provide them with great exercise, fresh air, and allow them the opportunity to appreciate the outdoors. There’s no better way for them to experience nature while also staying active. This alone should be reason enough to send your kids to the golf course.

Boosts Brain Activity

Whether it’s in the classroom this upcoming school year, or years down the road in a business meeting, often times in your children’s future they will be required to solve problems for themselves.

The game of golf requires people to think objectively, and rely on decision making. On the course, kids will learn how to strategize, plan, and problem solve, preparing them for situations in the future that are inevitable.

Life Prep

Golf is a structured game, with a strong tradition of etiquette and rules. This provides everyone, especially kids, a foundation that can be built upon to propel them towards success in life.

Being a part of the club house and as they observe their peers, kids learn manners and respect.

Discovering new ways to improve their game and taking proper lessons will teach kids about discipline.

And with each round, kids will learn how to calm themselves and gain patience.

It’s a Lot of FUN!

Finally, golf is a lot of fun! Your kids will get to play every day, meet lifelong friends, and create memories on the golf course that will be cherished for life.

Of all the summer activities, golf is one of the best things for your kids to do during the summer. That’s why we offer great rates to kids of all ages, lessons, and a safe and fun environment to keep them busy all summer long.

The snow is melted, and a warm sun and the sight of grass has you thinking about golf. And while the golf course is still a few days from opening, there are still some great pre-season hacks you can do in order to jump start your peak form.

Here are some ways to help make your friends jealous when they’re all showing signs of winter rust, and you’re playing like you spent the whole winter with a club in your hands.

Stretch Goals

Yes it’s important to map out where you want your game to be this summer, but we mean a different type of stretch goal. In fact, we mean it quite literally.

Simple yoga pairs excellently with golf. Not only does practicing yoga strengthen your core, but it also extends your range of motion and lengthens out your muscles, improving flexibility. Tuning in to how your body moves, and improving your flexibility will make your swing flow naturally, help you relax more, and even prevent injury.

Don’t want to turn full yogi and roll into a studio? YouTube has plenty of great videos online that you can follow from the comfort of your own home.

Brain Power

Everybody knows that golf is a mental game. Some of the most epic meltdowns stem from one getting in one’s own head, and not being able to calm down.

The best way to stay calm, or to centre yourself after a bad shot, is to put yourself into a routine. Practice breathing techniques, visualizing shots, and create a pre-shot routine. This is something you can create a habit for pre-season, in the yard, garage, or living room. Find what works for you and repeat it until it becomes your happy place.

Mirror Time

There’s nothing worse than taking a bad shot and having someone from your group tell you what you’re doing wrong. Even if you know they’re right, correcting issues in your swing isn’t something that happens mid-round, it’s something that happens before you ever hit the course.

Practicing your technique in the mirror at home is a great way to see what others see. Something that feels right to you, may not be proper technique and is causing you strokes.

Simply practice your backswing in slow motion, then speed it up, making adjustments where needed. Then move to your front swing, and finally your full swing. Practice each for 5 minutes a few times per week. This might even help you pinpoint areas you want to address with a Pro for some lessons in the future.

Hit up the Simulator

Are you tired of shooting high numbers for your first couple of rounds? Why not shake that rust off early by hitting up a golf simulator.

Not only will you get the feeling of you swing back, you’ll be able to adjust and fix problem areas, or even try new techniques. A simulator can even help you adjust to new clubs so you’re not getting frustrated on the course.

Most importantly, it’s a lot of fun and the closest thing to being on the course.

It’s cold. It’s windy. It’s getting dark earlier. For many golfer’s, it’s quite easy to focus on the negative aspects that come with the end of the season.
It’s the experienced golfer who understands one of the best kept secrets in golf: Fall golf is amazing. OK, so maybe it isn’t a big secret, but not enough people take the time to venture out into the brisk autumn day and golf 18 holes.

For those people, here are some of the things you’re missing out on:

The Course: The colder temperature means the reaction of your shots will be different than usual. You’re going to get less roll, so you won’t be able to stretch out your drives like you’re used to. You’ll also be achieving less ball speed. This presents a new challenge for most golfers, requiring them to change their typical game plan for a course they’ve gotten familiar with. After a season of playing the same holes, cycling through your irons and changing up your approach is going to be a welcome change.

The course is also going to be less crowded, meaning you can make it through your round a bit faster. But don’t feel rushed. This is a great opportunity to take your time, work on your game by taking that extra few swings, or re-putting missed opportunities on the greens. Not having to worry about anyone else means you can focus all of your attention on yourself.

The Scenery: The Fall season takes all of the amazing views and scenery you’ve gotten familiar with over the summer and amps it up another level. Leaves start to change color and fall from the trees, providing a more vibrant environment. Even the greens and fairways get scattered with yellow, red, and orange as the leaves start to fall, offering a pretty unique experience.

The Cost: If you’re not a member, green fees are typically less expensive this time of year. Check with the clubhouse and discover shoulder season rates and take advantage of the discounted price. It’s obvious from all of the other great things about Fall golf, it certainly won’t be a discounted experience.

Take a moment and reflect on the fact that the golf season is almost over. This will make you appreciate every round, every shot, and every post-round beer even more. Who knows, knowing that the season is fleeting might even put that extra spark in your game to help hit those milestones you’ve been striving for. Whatever way you spin it, the Fall is an amazing time for golf.
